Many won’t join Facebook because they can’t understand why anyone would post useless drivel on the Internet. So I remind them they don’t have to. There’s no law against posting intellectual substance; it’s boring–but not against the law. Then I asked why they thought useless drivel appropriate in person. Oops! (Not the best way to keep friends.) Anyway, others complain about posting personal information for the entire world to read. I tell them to not do that. Facebook has privacy settings that allow control over that sort of thing. Some warn of becoming addicted. I say no! Others consider it a poor substitute for what’s really needed–human contact. And it’s that point that intrigues me most.

Reluctant to hop on board the Facebook wagon at first, I finally took the plunge. It’s free, and I could delete my account if I didn’t like it. Plus, I told myself, social media is a practical skill in today’s business world. It all added up to a good idea personally and professionally.

Now, I’ll confess to having forced myself to watch a short video tutorial that would introduce me to the interface. But Facebook is so intuitive at its most basic level that most people can skip this step. Then, I set my first goal: get more friends than my wife!

It didn’t take long to surpass her in friends; not counting that elaborate anime fanatic from Japan whose invite I accidentally accepted. Then it hit me as I quickly connected with family I hadn’t seen in decades and those separated by the miles. Friends from work, school, and band days were now a part of my cool-dandy address book. The secret Facebook friend-finding algorithm (if there even is such a thing) could help connect me with pre-email friends. And my address book was connected with hundreds of other address books; and those books connected with hundreds more.

Some might say, but I’ve got email for that sort of thing. I’d say, no you don’t. Email does not mimic organic human interaction the way social media does. Besides, Facebook comes with email. Some suggest picking up the phone whenever they want to talk to someone. I say go ahead. But friend them on Facebook while you’re at it.

“Again, I’ve got email for that.”
“No, this is better.”
“I’ve got a phone.”
“Beh-ter. Facebook is better.”

It’s so cool the day someone you don’t know “likes” some emotionally unrestrained comment you left on another friend’s post. And there’s nothing like getting “poked” for no reason. Poke back! That’s the point. Being social doesn’t require a reason. It’s merely a function of life. So if you don’t know what “like” and “poke” mean, it’s time to get a life! The only thing you need to get started is a face. You don’t even need a friend.

I am a cancer–crabby by nature. But Facebook helped me break out of my shell. It suits my many hours at the computer. And I am in touch, managing, and thinking about family and friends more than I ever had before. Online social media is not meant to substitute for real human interaction: It enhances it. I have learned so much more about those casual acquaintances and coworkers that I never would have known; all good things. Being connected in this way has taught me to appreciate everyone for who they are. Some friends are conservative; others are liberal. Some like country music (like me); some hate it (like my mom). But the real beauty is that everyone has the freedom to be themselves. You don’t have to agree or like everything they post, but you can at least be their friend. I would like to make one suggestion though. So Mr. Zuckerberg, if you’re listening, it’s time for a “love” button.

With his axe lifted up, behind his head, his look gave off a sense of concentration. From his wrinkled brow to his gritted teeth, this man meant business. His victim lay on the ground, helpless. There was nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. Suddenly, he lifted his weapon swiftly, hammering it to the ground with a loud, THWACK. Split in half after one blow. No harm was done, for it was already dead before the axe hit it. He only collects the dead, as the Grim Reaper, collecting the souls of those who will tread the earth no more. Bending over, he picked up his prey and threw it into the back of his wagon. It was rusted over from the blood of those who had previously taken a ride to the other side. After loading this final body, he scoped out his next target for when he would return.

He stood the size of an average man, 5’10″, but his build made up for it. His legs were that of tree trunks, thick and full of vigor, not ready to be brought down easily. They were what this man trusted to keep him up. They would not, could not fail him. His stomach laid flat say for the six mounts of muscle, ready to bend and serve him for every need required. They showed just how dedicated he was to his work, for they are not acquired by the faint of heart. His chest screamed that of a mighty jungle man. That was essentially what he was. His whole world revolved around the fruits of Mother Nature. She was the one who appointed him from the beginning. His arms were most impressive, however. They were alive with power, pierced with thick, pulsating veins. In them, he trusted most to complete his tasks. The constant raising and lowering of his weapon required such power. Finally came his head. It was a mess of hair aside from the top: bushy brown beard, shaggy eyebrows, mustache, and sideburns. That made up for his hairless crown. His teeth had all been knocked out from the previous years of service, so that left him toothless. He was, nonetheless, something to fear.

That’s my dad. No, he’s not exactly a grim reaper. Neither is he a murderer. He’s a lumberjack and his clients call him Chopsaw. He spends the greater half of his days in the woods that cover our 60some acres of land. In a way, he collects the dead, for those are the only kind of trees he cuts down. It’s a tedious job, sawing down trees then chopping them into stackable pieces. With all this wood, he needs something to carry it all, but it’s not a wagon.

His first vehicle he used for this job was a bright orange 55 Chevy. It was his first truck he had ever owned as well. He had bought it used and drove it on the road for five years before he took it into the woods with him. It was a sturdy companion, lasting him about 15 years. He would have used it longer had parts for it been easier to attain. The reason for this was that it was considered a collector at this time. It still sits in our yard as a token from his past. The next truck he used became yet another Chevy. This time, it was white and a 66 model. It had a flatbed with sideboards, making there more room to hold a bigger load. Being only 2 wheel drive, this made it extremely difficult to drive in the winter. Its true end came when a tree fell on it, smashing it. Following those came similar trucks with similar stories. His current truck has been his favorite (and mine as well) by far, though. It is a lime green automatic old mudding and derby truck. It truly is a beast and perfect for driving in all sorts of weather and brush.

He is pushing it in age on top of everything else, being 68, but there never seems to be an ending supply of dead trees or people looking for firewood. He needs the exercise, too, since he has type 1 diabetes, needing a way that he can work off his blood sugar. Performing this tiresome job for some 30 years, he has had many close-calls with death. He has wild stories he shares from his adventures in the woods, such as the proceeding one.

Deep in the shadows of the woods on a hot summer day, Chopsaw prepared to take down a particular tricky tree. It stood high above the earth, its branches stretching to the sky, but also entwined with its neighbor’s. That was the problem. Because of this, he couldn’t very well guess exactly which way it would fall. He would have to cut it at a large enough angel to force it to fall backwards. He revved up his Husqvarna chainsaw and had at it. Slowly, he let the teeth of the saw chew away at the trunk. He paused after every few inches, glancing up to see whether it had changed position. Once his saw had munched halfway through the tree, it began to fall. First, in the direction he wanted it to, away from him and his truck. Then, because of how it had been entangled, it suddenly was pulled back and fell viciously upon my father’s truck. The roof caved under the impact and the windshield shattered. On top of that, as my dad tried to run out of its way, he was struck hard on the top of the head by one of the branches; knocked unconscious, light’s out. When he came to, he had no idea of how much time had passed. All he knew was that he had one heck of a headache. He proceeded to get right back up, cut the tree into logs, and then slice them into neat, stackable, pieces. He mustn’t have been out for long since I don’t remember having to go looking for him. Luckily, he was still able to drive the truck home, but with the shape the windshield was in, he had to find a new one.

Another incident took place after he cut a tree down. It was now on the ground and he was taking his chainsaw to slice the tree into cylindrical parts, each about a foot long. As he was cutting towards the top of the tree, he noticed some strange brown goop along his saw. Down by his feet, a bull snake, about 5 feet long, was slithering wildly. What had happened was that the snake must’ve been lower in the tree before my father cut it. As the cutting began, it seemed to try to escape by climbing up the inside of the tree. When the tree hit the ground, it must’ve been jarred by the fall since it didn’t get much further. After the blade cut the snake, it put the last of its energy in trying to escape with its body severed. Being terrified of snakes, my dad ran as fast as he could from the incident, keeping his eye on the spot where the snake was, just in case it came back to life.

While cutting towards the bottom of the tree during the fall, he had yet another surprise in store. He was simply waiting for it to fall over as he continued with his chainsaw through the tree. Once the tree began to fall, a large raccoon suddenly climbed out of a hole higher up the tree, frantically trying to reach the top. When it got there, all the while the tree continued to fall, it leapt through the air, trying to fly away, terrified. Landing on the ground, it sped off, putting as much distance between my dad and itself as it could. Fortunately, it was up high and scared enough to not want to come after my dad. If it had, my dad would have simply gained a new fur hat.

This next tale dates back to before I was born. It took place while he was sawing down a tree on what used to be our neighbors farm. As the blade was running, it suddenly started to sound as if it were getting stuck on something. He took the saw out and didn’t see anything wrong with it, so he kept going. Each time he tried using the saw again, it continued to hit something, possibly a knot in the tree. At this point, he decided to saw around whatever was hitting the saw. Finally, the tree came down. He went up to the trunk of the tree and found an old gear that looked to be from an old farm machine. How on earth could something like that end up inside of a tree, though? At this point, Chopsaw decided to head over to the home of the people who used to own the land and ask them if they knew anything about it. They did. They told him that about a hundred or so years ago, they’re great-grandfather used to farm the land. One day, one of the gears on his cultivators cracked, so he took it off and placed it around a tree that was just a sapling at the time. It must have been left there for it had now grown with the tree! If only that would happen more often, but with more valuable things.

As kids, we always found our dad’s job super cool and we always wanted to help. Each day, after school, we’d beg him to let us come along with him to help in whatever way possible. The only job he let us do was load the wood into the back of his truck. We’d always try to race him by stacking all the wood he split onto his truck before he could split more. Thinking back to it, I don’t believe we ever could beat him. Another reason we’d go out there with him was that he’d let us sit on his lap and steer his truck. That was something I was very proud of and bragged a lot about at school. Of course, us kids got older and started asking for money each time we’d go out there with him. He’d give us five dollars each, which was good enough for us. Once we each passed the age of thirteen, it just wasn’t our thing anymore. Computers and cartoons were what our minds were on. He didn’t mind that, though. He needed some time away from all of us and that was where he escaped to.

The more I think about it, it does indeed seem as if he were appointed by a higher power to deliver the dead of the forests to a new stage in their journey where they would still be assisting in the care of this world; keeping others warm, cooking meals. He’s still alive, isn’t he? There is more work for him yet to be done. I guess you could say he’s the Paul Bunyan of our land. Always has been, always will be.

According to the FBI, Adam Mayes, a suspect in a double murder and kidnapping was found with a self inflicted gun shot wound that he did not survive. Mayes allegedly kidnapped a woman and her three children due to being under the impression that two of the children were his. The mother and her oldest daughter were found murdered and buried in Mayes back yard.

Adam Mayes was charged earlier in the week along with his wife, with first degree murder of a Tennessee woman and her teenage daughter. Jo Ann Bain and her daughter Adrienne, who was only 14 were found buried in the Mayes backyard.. It is also charged that they kidnapped Alexandria, age 12, and Kyliyah, age 8. The FBI becomes involved with vicious crimes that cross state lines. Since the family originated in Tennessee, and the bodies were found in Mississippi, FBI claimed jurisdiction.

Mayes mother, Mary Frances, was also charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping. Teresa Mayes was arrested as well and told FBI that she had witnessed the killing of JoAnn Bain in the garage and Adrienne inside the Mayes home. After Adam Mayes was charged, he went into hiding.

Shortly after his disappearance, he was placed on the FBI’s Top 10 fugitive list. After he was located, the FBI SWAT team closed in on his location. Mayes realized that he was going to be captured, he allegedly shot him self in the head.

The swat team attempted to resuscitate him. After loosing his pulse twice, he was pronounce dead at a local hospital. The two younger girls who were declared kidnapped after the death of their mother and older sister were found unharmed.

Family and neighbors of the victims claim that Mayes was obsessed with the family and stated that the two girls that he kidnapped were his own children. It was also reported that he was obsessed with the two little girls.

I don’t know how long I stared at the tickets…but I know it was for a while – $ 200 dollars? I thought to myself, $ 200 dollars! Prior to that moment, I never knew that tickets could be that expensive, and here I was holding a pair of tickets equaling $ 200. What, is the theater made out of pure gold?

Granted, $ 100 per ticket is actually a really good deal when it comes to musicals. But still! Who cares that it’s a brand new musical? So what that it has had rave reviews? What does it matter that it’s playing at the Cambridge Theater in London? It’s $ 200 dollars for a pair of tickets!

Regardless of all of this, I went to Matilda the Musical. Not because I’m really enjoy musicals (which I do), nor was it because I’m a big fan of the author Roald Dahl (which I am). I went because my wife Kim said: “Can we please?” “Of course, Kim! I would love to go!” I think I heard my credit card cry out in pain as it was swiped.

That preamble aside, I was actually looking forward to Matilda the Musical. Kim had said that “when we go to London, I just want to see Matilda. If we see nothing else, I want to at least see Matilda. I always thought that book would make a fantastic musical, and if they hadn’t gotten to it first, I would have made it!”

As a kid, I read almost all of Roald Dahl’s books and I quite enjoyed the film version of Matilda (“You can do it, Bruce!”). So when I sat down in the Cambridge Theater (after paying $ 200 for tickets) my expectations were really quite high.

Matilda the musical did not disappoint.

The set design was incredible. The music was fantastic. The acting was superb. The story (and book for stage) was wonderful. And the actors (many of whom were just children) were exceptionally talented.

The music was both funny (“Telly,” and “The Smell of Rebellion”), at at sometimes quite tender (“When I Grow Up”). As soon as Kim and I got home from our honeymoon we downloaded the CD from iTunes and I’ve listened to the music many times. Wonderful stuff!

But for me, the real show stopper was the Trunchbull, played by Bertie Carvel. Carvel’s performance of the Trunchbull made my stomach hurt from laughing too much. He was amazing; well deserving of the Olivier award he won for best actor in a musical. I’d go back and see the show just to catch all of the funny little things he said (“I already told you, she’s a gangster.”)

When Kim and I left the theater I remember turning to her and saying “That was worth it.”

(And I’ve kept my ticket.)

I own and operate a business called NEPA Youth Cheerleading in Charlotte, NC. It is a cheerleading program for the youth ages three to 12 years. I started my business last year in March 2011. I found a great space and location to rent. I rent space on the weekends inside of an established dance studio called Fred Astaire. I have saved over $ 1,000 per month, by renting space inside of the dance studio. The owner of the dance studio, only charges me $ 50 per two hour session. There are a total of four sessions per month, and the sessions are only on Saturdays. I am spending only $ 200 per month to rent space for my program. There is no long term lease. I pay rent as I go. I reside in Charlotte, NC and to rent space in a good location is very expensive. The type of space I would need, would be one large open room with a nice floor, approximately 1500-1800 square feet. It would cost me an estimation of $ 1500 to $ 2200 to lease my own space, with a two year lease in Charlotte, NC. It is less expensive to find an established place that offers to rent space out. I use part of my cheer tuition that I receive from my clientele, to pay the rent. I use another small portion of the tuition to pay for my advertising, and the remainder is profit in my pocket.

I am on a tight budget when it comes to my business. My business has only been in operation a little over a year. I am still building my clientele. In order to make a profit, I have to budget in every way I can, by setting a strict budget per month. I have a set amount of money to spend on anything pertaining to the business.

It is expensive to advertise in newspaper ads, magazines, ordering brochures, on radio and television etc.

I have found it to be less expensive if you create your own flyers and brochures on your computer, word of mouth and have business signs made.

Budgeting Tips With Hiring Employees

I have found, that it is less expensive to get experienced volunteers that only want to gain more experience and add another reference to their resume. This eliminates having to pay employees. This has cost me zero dollars every month.

Tips on How You Can Budget With Your Business

-Rent space from an established business (verses) leasing your own space with a 1 to 2 year lease

-Eliminate ordering fancy brochures and flyers

-Create your own brochures and flyers (verses) buying brochures and flyers

-Advertise on free classified ads online (verses) paying for classified ads

-Tell everyone you know about your business

-Always pass out your business cards to everyone you meet and talk with

-Put a decal sign on your vehicle (for constant advertising as you drive around)

-Purchase used items, furniture etc.. (instead of new items)

-Save all of your receipts pertaining to business for tax purposes

-Always have a certain amount of money to spend on your business each month

-Set a monthly budget and do not go over the set budget amount (verses) not having a budget

The above tips are how I manage and stick to a budget, for my business. This is working for me. I am making good profits and still maintaining my budget.

For those of us who stayed up and saw Game 1 of the series between the Los Angeles Clippers and Memphis Grizzles, we saw one of the greatest comebacks in sports history. The Clippers were down by 27 points, 24 with under eight minutes to go. From that point, the Clippers outscored the Grizzles 28-3 to pull out a 99-98 victory and take an improbable 1-0 series lead. Game 2 will be Wednesday night in Memphis. Let’s be honest with ourselves. There’s no reason why the Grizzles shouldn’t be up in this series, but you have to give the Clippers credit for not giving up and finding a way to win. This is why you have to play every minute of every game because you never know what could happen. The reality is that the Grizzlies find themselves down 1-0 instead of the other way around and they have lost home court advantage, at least temporarily.

I get that this is the type of loss that could make a team collapse, or it could bring a team closer together. It just depends on the team that you’re talking about. I have heard a lot of people on numerous sports outlets say that this series is over for the Grizzles and there’s no way that a team can rebound from this type of loss. I would say that it’s crazy to think that a seven game series is over after the first game. We have to be careful about saying a team is dead before we even see what’s going to happen in the rest of the series, especially if only one game has been played.

Let’s take this Clippers-Grizzles series for example. Yes, this is a disappointing loss for the Grizzles and it could have a crippling effect going forward. But again I will stress that it was only Game 1. We’re talking about a team who were a game away from the Western Conference Finals last year as an eighth-seed. The Grizzles are a good, hard-nosed team that won’t go away quietly. Trust me when I say they will respond from this and I still have the Grizzles winning this series. If you combine that with the fact the Clippers have lost forward Caron Butler for four to six weeks with a broken hand, the Grizzles are still in good position to win this series. Is this loss hurtful? Yes. But this series isn’t close to being over.

Another series that I heard was over after Game 1 was the series between the Miami Heat and the New York Knicks. The Heat blew out the Knicks 100-67 on Saturday afternoon and, just like with the Clippers-Grizzles series, this series is already over in a lot of people’s minds. It just seems like there are a lot of people who are on the Heat train and are ready to call them the champions before they even win a title (greatest paper champions ever as far as I’m concerned). After the game, I kept hearing how there was a different “look” to forward LeBron James, like he’s ready to take that next step and finally breakthrough the demons he has created for himself. It wasn’t too long ago that we were talking about how James runs away from the ball in the clutch moments. The first game of a first round playoff series shouldn’t change that. Until I finally see James come through in the Finals and the Heat hoist the Larry O’ Brien trophy, I still say the Heat are a overhyped team. And don’t count out the Knicks yet. If you don’t think a team with Amare Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony, and Tyson Chandler won’t be heard from, you’re sadly mistaken (I’m on record as saying the Knicks will pull the “upset” so I expect nothing less). Let’s not give the Heat the title just because they took care of home court for one game.

In closing, I want to say that we saw a great opening weekend for the NBA Playoffs. But that’s all it was, the opening weekend. There is a lot of basketball left to be played and the teams that are down 1-0 are far from out. This is why we have to watch the games play out on the court, not on paper. It was a forgone conclusion that the Indiana Pacers would sweep the Orlando Magic since the Magic are without their best player, center Dwight Howard. We all saw that the Magic are going to make it as hard as possible on the Pacers to put them away. All I’m saying is series aren’t won after Game 1. For the Grizzles, Knicks and other teams down 1-0, they’re not about to mail it in and give up. I look forward to what people will say if the Grizzles and Knicks are able to even their respective series at one game a piece.

There comes a time in many people’s lives when the religion of their birth no longer works for them. Whether it is a philosophical or ethical decision, an excommunication or family issue – leaving a religion can be one of the most traumatic experiences of life.

This is especially true of religions that are fairly closed and insular, such as the Jehovah’s Witnesses or the LDS church. Studies have shown that leaving these “high-cost” or “new religious movement” religions frequently coincides with poorer health (Scheitle & Adamczyk, 2010), familial breakups, loss of trust in social institutions, and a short-term drop in faith (Buxant & Saraglou, 2008). A member who leaves the fold may be faced with pressure from family and friends who remain active. Their spouse may divorce them. They may suddenly find themselves without the tight support network, religious position, sense of identity, and underlying faith that may have defined them in the past.

If you are going through this now, you already know the bad news. Here is the good news: Despite these traumatic experiences, research does show that ex-members tend to re-adapt to life, and that many of the destructive effects of leaving a religion are only short-term (Buxant & Saraglou, 2008).

So – what can you do to get through this transition period before you feel comfortable in a spiritual belief system that is authentically yours?

Here are some ideas:

Make and contact some friends outside of your religion who may serve as a stable base for you during this time

Confide in someone how you are feeling and thinking. If you are worried that your friend or family member will retaliate, try speaking with a therapist who is not an active member of the religion you are leaving

Keep a journal to get your thoughts and feelings out of your head and onto paper

Do some soul-searching to discover what your deeper values are (see my article on Valor), and realize that those are coming with you

Find a support group or listserve for people who have left the same religion or another like it

Get physical. Sometimes, getting more exercise, feeling the sun on your skin, getting a massage, or doing mindfulness meditation can help get out of your head and back in touch with your body

Expect a “change back” reaction from your friends and family. They are used to your being a part of their group, and it is natural for them to consciously or unconsciously amp up manipulations that have been successful in the past in order to bring you back into the fold. If you expect this, they will be easier to spot and address

Draw and maintain boundaries with your loved ones – you are entitled to pursue your own meaning and spirituality. You are also entitled to the same amount of respect for your choices as you give your loved ones for theirs. You will feel very illegitimate and vulnerable at first, but holding your boundaries will become much more natural and intuitive with time

Tolerate ambiguity. Realize that you do not need to come up with an alternative philosophy/faith that addresses all of the problems you had with your old one. You do not need to know all of the right answers to know that some are wrong. The point is to move in the right direction.

In 2010 the Washington Nationals debuted a pitcher by the name of Stephen Strasburg. This rookie stole the spotlight from hyped up Atlanta Braves rookie Jason Heyward and became the talk of the baseball loving nation. The Washington Nationals were later able to land another big chunk of hype with young baseball prodigy Bryce Harper. Aside from some splashes of Yu Darvish, Brett Lawrie, and Eric Hosmer mania, Bryce Harper is seemingly the biggest influence on the baseball card market and tabloid show quality sports news of 2012 having stolen the crown from Mr. Strasburg. In April of 2012 Bryce Harper, after buzzing through the minors, made his major league baseball game debut in Los Angeles verses the Dodgers. Here are the three funniest facts about Bryce Harper’s debut.

#3: Boo!
When Bryce Harper came up to the plate for his first ever at bat in a major league baseball game it was to a loud sound wall of boos. The Los Angeles Dodgers have been known to have a feisty crowd, eager to impose ill-will onto visiting opponents, and they let Harper have it. It is a clear sign of Bryce Harper’s status and the hype surrounding his name that pretty much the entire stadium knew exactly who he was before the first pitch to him and cared enough to boo him. I’m sure it will be a fond, if not quirky memory for the guy when it looks back on his introduction to the big stage of the game.

#2: Where is his batting helmet?
Bryce Harper lived up to expectations by delivering his first major league hit in his very first game. His first hit was a double and as he sped around first base and headed to second he could be seen purposefully reaching up to his helmet and pushing it off of his head. People have speculated as to why he threw off his helmet, another sign of the power behind the Harper hype because generally if a helmet falls off: who cares. Some think he was trying to look cool like a little league kid, some think the helmet was too big and he wanted extra speed, and some also think he just wanted to show off his weird haircut. Maybe number two should actually be about that hair-do, a flowing mullet-hawk? I’m not really sure, but if he inspires kids to cut their hair like that along with putting on all of the black under-eye makeup he wears, baseball could start looking pretty freaky in the future.

#1: Full moon!
If you look at slow motion footage of Bryce Harper getting his first major league hit, you can see fans in the background standing up out of their seats and doing “the wave” behind where the batter stands. You also get to see a guy drop his pants and moon Bryce Harper as he hits the double. Yep, one of the people in the background flashes his butt to the camera during the epic moment.

The Washington Nationals ended up losing the baseball game to the Dodgers thanks to Matt Kemp being an early season unstoppable monster of a player hitting a walk-off home run. However, Bryce Harper made his debut memorable and looked like a high energy, solid player all the way around. Unless of course you want to take points off for the helmet toss. He not only had the double, but also a sacrifice pop fly, and for Washington Nationals fans that peek at the promise of exciting plays to come might have them dropping their pants in excitement for Harper as well.

On April 22, 1970, rallies were held to raise awareness,
Knowing to involve everyone would be a very big task at hand.
The Environmental Protection Agency was in all fairness,
Tasked with protecting the earth’s air, water and land.
